Residents of Russia are gradually moving away from the tradition of visiting the New Year. Experts believe that this is due to the desire to save. For the owners have to buy gifts, and it hits the pocket.

Only 35% of those polled by VTsIOM met as guests in 2017. Although a year earlier, this figure was higher - 52%, and 12 months earlier - 59%. “A feature of this particular New Year was the decision of many respondents to spend their holidays at home, which may be related to the financial side (you will not go away without a gift) or weather conditions in some regions of the country,” said VTsIOM analyst Ivan Lekoontsev.
Most often, Russians gave each other cosmetics and perfumery, as well as jewelry - 27%, sweets and alcohol - 25%, souvenirs - 15%. But 16% of the population of the country this year were left without gifts. Last year, the structure of gifts was different.According to Yandex, home appliances and electronics were in the first place, then jewelery and bijouterie, then household goods and cosmetics, then books and children's products. In this case, gifts often fall out of place. “When buying gifts, people spend money on products that rarely reflect the needs or desires of people who are given them,” said Shaun Snait, an economist at the University of Central Florida.
According to the National Rating Agency of Russia, the total volume of the Christmas gifts market this year amounted to 550 billion rubles. With all this, the number of those who are satisfied with the New Year holidays in the country is growing. Last year there were 72%, and now - 78%. But most of all pleased with Santa Claus. “The total income of Grandfathers Frost per year is thus at least 68.5 billion rubles,” calculated Maxim Vasin, the chief economist of the NRA.
