To reward on the recommendation of ... the enemy ?!

The destroyer of the British royal navy "Gloworm" (eng .- HMS "Glowworm"), which means "Firefly", was adopted shortly before the beginning of World War II, in 1936. The destroyer received its only and last heroic battle on April 8, 1940, near the Norwegian port of Tromso, at the height of the operation to occupy Norway by Nazi Germany.
Firefly commanded the British captain-lieutenant Gerard Broadmead Roop.

Then on April 8, 1940, the destroyer conducted a search off the coast of the Norwegian Sea. In the morning he collided with two German destroyers: the Z-18 and Z-11. German destroyers were part of the escort, which was sent to capture Norway. At its head was the German heavy cruiser "Admiral Hipper". "Firefly", being not timid, joined the battle with German destroyers. At the same time, the German destroyers dispersed, requesting help on the radio. Their call was answered by the lead ship of the German squadron, the same cruiser “Admiral Hipper”.

The destroyer of the British Navy "Gloworm" (Firefly).
The Hipper opened fire on the Firefly, but only covered him from the fourth volley. Part of the guns, the radar installation and the engine room were damaged on the destroyer. The forces were not equal, but the Firefly did not want to surrender. On the destroyer included smoke screen, trying to get out of sight of the German cruiser. When leaving the veil, it turned out that the range for firing from the guns was small, then the "Firefly" attacked the "Hipper" with torpedoes. But the torpedo attack was not crowned with success, ammunition went by the target.

smoking firefly, probably before his last attack.
And then, when the German cruiser passed through the smoke screen, the Firefly launched its last attack. He rammed the body of the Hipper. To the British destroyer, after the collision, the nose was torn off, and the German cruiser received several holes in the hull. For Firefly, this damage was fatal. He soon sank. "Hipper", having received serious damage, later stood up for repair.
The crew of the German cruiser raised to his board and rescued about 40 people of the crew of the Firefly from 149 full-time. The commander of the destroyer, Gerard Rupa was not among them, he was killed along with the ship. The German cruiser commander Helmut Heye, admired by the firefly’s crew’s courage, subsequently wrote a petition to the British government asking him to award the British destroyer commander. He sent his request through the Red Cross organization.

H. Haye, commander of the German heavy cruiser "Admiral Hipper". It was he who wrote the petition, asking to award the commander of the "Firefly".
This document lay idle until the end of the Second World War. An article about the exploit of the British destroyers was published in the London newspaper in July 1945, after the end of the war in Europe. It was then that the decision was made to award Lieutenant Commander Gerard Rupa the highest award of the British Empire, the "Victoria Cross."
