Motor UMP-417: characteristics and design features

Cars for many years were produced unchanged. All products were sold on military and special orders. Such customers are quite satisfied with the characteristics of the UAZ cars. The situation began to change by the end of the 80s, when even the picky military began to notice the backlog of technical data of the "UAZ".

One of the first attempts to improve the parameters of cars was the upgraded engine UMP-417, which went into series in 1989. The motor was designed to complete a promising model of the plant with an index of 3151.

General information

The engine came to replace the engine model 414 and was based on many components and parts of this powertrain. About 90% of parts are identical.

The main changes affected the oil filtration system, the head of the block and the carburetor. The measures taken allowed to bring the power parameters of UMP-417 to 92 forces. In addition, the introduction of a complete oil purification has significantly increased the life of the power unit, and the engine retains full interchangeability with the old engine.


Over the years of production, the engine was produced in several modifications, differing in equipment and octane fuel. The most common are the following versions:

  • 10 is a basic variant calculated for the use of fuel with a number not lower than 76. It had a compression of about 7 units and developed up to 92 forces.
  • 5.10 - dozhaty to 8.2 units of the head under the 92nd gasoline. Power increased by 6 forces. Delivered to the GAZ conveyor.
  • 8.10 - analogue of the previous one, but designed for a more advanced carburetor with two cameras.
  • 8.10-01 and 8.10-03 - variants with increased clutch up to 254 mm (lever drive). Components 03 had a pre-installed power steering pump.
  • 8.10-10 is a variant of the UMZ-417 engine with a head from the 421st model with increased valve seats for exhaust gases.
  • 8.10-52 - Version with a 240-mm clutch diaphragm circuit.
  • 9.10-01 - military version. Initially, it was packaged with screens of the electrical system and optionally with an autonomous heater. Went exclusively with a 254 mm clutch.
  • 9.10-05 and 9.10-25 - options with 240 mm clutch.

To date, the production remained the only 82-horsepower engine of this family.

The cylinder block and the upper half of the UMZ-417 crankcase are molded in one piece of aluminum alloy.At the same time, removable cylinder liners made of special cast iron with an admixture of vanadium are used in the construction. The sleeves are sealed at the top with a part clip when installing the head. The lower part has an oil resistant gasket.

This scheme allows you to ensure the integrity of the cooling system and reliable heat dissipation from the walls of the sleeve. An aluminum head is placed on top of the block. Between the details, a gasket with a symmetrical scheme is used - it can be put on any side.

Engine UMP 417

UMZ-417 piston is made of aluminum alloy and coated with a very thin layer of tin (no more than 6 microns). The piston has three rings. In this case, the groove under the upper ring undergoes a special treatment with a laser beam, which significantly increases the hardness of the material. The axis of the finger is slightly offset from the axis of the piston.

The crankshaft is mounted on five bearings with interchangeable liners. The shaft sock is sealed with a rubber gland, while the rear end retains the seal with rings and an asbestos cord. This design is not durable and is one of the main objects of complaints to the UAZ with the UMP-417.

At the front of the shaft, there is a gas distribution drive gear and a pulley used to drive various units. A cast-iron flywheel with a ring with teeth mounted on it is placed on the back of the shaft. The ring serves to turn the shaft when starting with a starter.


The intake and exhaust scheme is standard for UMP engines. The system includes a shaft located in the block and driven by a gear drive from the main shaft of the engine. Adjustment of the parameters of work is carried out by marks on the gears, which determine the mutual position of the shafts. From the shaft timing is a pump lubrication system and the fuel supply to the carburetor.

The shaft rotates in five bearing bearings and drives the valves through a sucker-rod mechanism. During operation, continuous rotation of the boom pushers is ensured, which contributes to uniform lubrication and wear. The rods are connected with rocker arms that directly act on the valve.

The UMZ-417 engine valves are installed in the head and made of heat-resistant material (for release) or steel with a high chromium content (intake). Closing them is done by springs.

Lubrication and cooling

The lubrication system uses a dual principle - some parts are lubricated under pressure, and some - with splashes. Control over the health of the system is carried out by two sensors. When the pressure on the instrument panel drops red light. The operation of such an engine is strictly prohibited. The stock of oil is stored in a removable steel pallet. In its lower part there is a screw plug for draining old oil.

Cooling UMP-417 is carried out by forced pumping of fluid. To do this, the design has a special pump driven by the motor shaft. Temperature adjustment is performed by a special thermostat.


In general, the engines of the 417th generation proved to be quite reliable units, although not without drawbacks. The main advantages are high maintainability and serviceability in the most remote parts of our country.
