This day, of course, is not as significant as Victory Day. But on April 25, 1945, when, near Torgau, the troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front met with the 1st US Army is also very important. Indeed, thanks to this compound, the remnants of the resisting German troops were split into northern and southern groups. The allies met and quite a bit remained until the end of the war.
The first meeting of American and Soviet patrols took place after the American patrol, commanded by Albert Kotzebue, crossed the Elbe. On the east bank of the river, the patrol met with Soviet soldiers commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Gordeyev.
In addition, on the same day, another American patrol, commanded by Second Lieutenant William Robertson, met with a group of Soviet soldiers, commanded by Lieutenant Alexander Silvashko, on a destroyed bridge over the Elbe.
And the next day, the commanders of the 69th division of the American army and the 58th guard division of the Soviet army met in Torgau.Robertson and Silvashko were also photographed at the same time.
