In Soviet times, fantastic films were not frequent guests on our screens. Nevertheless, there were authors whose works in this genre were transferred to the screens quite regularly. I have already talked about the film versions of the Strugatsky and Bulychev. The time has come to recall one more master of domestic fiction - Alexander Belyaev
The first attempt to adapt his work for cinema was made in 1939. Then, for the Odessa Film Studio, Alexander Romanovich himself wrote the script based on his story "When the Light Goes Out." Unfortunately, this project was not destined to be realized and the attempts to screen the works of the great Russian science fiction writer were forgotten before the end of the 50s (well, except Disney’s refusal of the Amphibian Man’s film adaptation at that time underwater shooting decent level). But in 1958, Vladimir Chebotaryov, Eduard Rozovsky and Gennady Kazansky took the Amphibian Man script dusting at the Lenfilm Studio for more than one year.Released in 1962, the film broke all existing at that time rental records. It looked, almost without exaggeration, the whole country.

The next film version was not long in coming. On March 23, 1968, Vladimir Ryabtsev, a two-part film entitled “Air Seller”, was released on television screens. Though he was not as colorful and exciting as Amphibia, he nevertheless also made fiction fans of those years stick to the screen.

After this, Belyaev was long forgotten. The next film adaptation was released only in 1984. Leonid Menaker’s “The Testament of Professor Dowell” cannot be called an adaptation. Rather, it is a film based on one of the best books of Belyaev, in which only the main characters, the outline of the plot and partly borrowed ideas remained from the original.

The next film, “The Island of the Dead Ships”, released in 1987, Evgeny Ginzburg and Rauf Mamedov were also shot based on the motives, leaving little of the author’s original idea in his affonade. But despite this, the film was very good.

In the same 1987, in the 12th edition of “This Fantastic World”, devoted to the relationship between robots and humans, the film adaptation of the story “Open Sesame !!!”

Then, with a difference of only two years, two very free versions of the novel “Ariel”
First, in 1990, Haji Ahmar on Uzbekfilm shoots the picture “Satellite of the planet Uranus”

And in 1992, Yevgeny Kotov released the film "Ariel"

Both films turned out to be extremely weak, both in terms of technical characteristics, as well as in acting and directing work.
In 1994, another quite decent adaptation of the “Islands of the lost ships” was released -
"Rains in the ocean." Only this time only the first chapters of the novel were taken for the film.

In 2004, the TV series “Sea Devil” based on the novel “Amphibian Man” was released on television screens, in which the action is postponed to our day, and Guttiere was made an aspiring singer from a poor family. That's just the only thing that this series can boast of - amazing place filming in Cuba

In 2015, the director Vladlen Barbe based on the same “Amphibian Man” filmed the cartoon “The Last Man of Atlantis”, but to be honest, I could not evaluate it, because I simply could not find anything except a few shots.

Another attempt to transfer to the screen "Amphibian Man" should take this summer, Chinese filmmakers. They are going to shoot in China, the Crimea and the Moscow region. With the help of Lenfilm.Judging by the description, the Chinese want to make, rather, not a new film version, namely, a remake of the 1962 film
Well, another project that should start this year is the superhero film “The Chosen,” which was presented by the Ghevond brothers and Sarik Andreasyan at the end of 2016. An adaptation of this will be difficult to call. There is likely to be very much based on the novels of Alexander Belyaev. According to the story, Ichthyander, head of Professor Dowell, woman-Frankenstein Briquet, Professor Wagner, Ariel and other characters of Belyaev unite to confront the villain Bailey, who steals the air.
